peak district Landscapes by Kristan Baggaley

Born in Sheffield, Kristan regularly visits the Peak District for walks and inspiration and has an intimate knowledge of the edges and moorlands throughout the changing seasonsInfluenced by Turner and Girtin, his paintings reveal the atmosphere and space of the landscape in it's various moods.  His mixed media paintings are oil paint mixed with sand and gritstone and have a sculptured texture that extenuates the depth and scale of each painting.

In his work over the last ten years Kristan has attempted to find an individual expression between figurative and abstract painting, which is revealed in each painting by the depth of colours expressing the shape, and nature of each location. The paintings are not simply about the features in the landscape but more about the colour, and its relationship with the surroundings and with the weather and light.
He often repeats paintings of the same view in different lights, and as such gets to know more about the essence and changing nature of each one.
Kristan typically paints in seasonal colours, reflecting his physical exploration of the landscape, and the exhibition is full of vibrant heathers, sun-drenched edges and impending skies as the weather changes from summer to autumn.
His latest work uses the physical construction of the landscape through oil paint mixed with sand and gritstone.  These sculptured canvases emit a light and shadow of their own from the density of their structure; and the colour and mood of the paintings can be seen to change in different light.
