Castleton From Stanage Edge Neil has been a self employed artist since finishing his degree course in graphic design from Norwich School of Art in 1984. "I find myself drawn to the rocky outcrops and hills of the Peak District which never fail to provide inspiration. It is my aim to accurately depict the image that I observe in terms of the initial drawing. I then aim to capture the fleeting effects of changing light as it highlights the features of the landscape using strong colour and tone. My work is mainly studio based but I enjoy sketching out in the open landscape in the drier months of the year. Watercolour was the main medium I used for many years (along with acrylics) but more recently I have specialised in painting with oils on canvas, adopting a looser style on a larger scale. I am particularly inspired by the work of John Singer Sarjeant, Edward Hopper (esp. his coastal landscape paintings) and Paul Cezanne." |
