My paintings
are a response to the environment here in the Peak District, I am
continually looking at how I can capture the everchanging colours and
texture as well as the dramatic sense of light and space; I use memory and
direct observation as well as found objects such as heather bracken and
pieces of stone from the walls, to give the paintings a strong sense of
place . A major interest within my work is how I explore the relationship
between the painting process and capturing something of the persona of a
certain environment. This process leads me on a journey of discovery with
the paint, the place, or source of inspiration, and the nature of being,
and comes to a conclusion when there is a balance of understanding between
these elements.
I see my
painting as a unifying activity, a process involving experience,
reflection, action and calm. These issues are brought to a resolve, and
harmony is shown through the marks, colour and space. My focus within this
process is to create a layering of paint and imagery in which one loses a
sense of self and becomes open, contemplative and responsive to the work.
I hope that my
paintings transmit a quality of awareness that is resting, stimulating and
revelationary rather than explanatory. This invites the viewer to
participate in an intimate way and thus complete the work.
