peak district Landscapes by Jenny Shaw-Browne

Jenny takes her inspiration from the landscape and it’s ever changing light altering the natural colours by the weather and the time of day.  Often she will return to the same scene at various times of the year and in different light and weather conditions, including moonlight.  A regular visitor to the Hope Valley for 18 years, Jenny has an intimate relationship with her surroundings, often seeking out hidden places, climbing over walls to select the best aspect for the painting.

Jenny grew up on her parent’s farm in North Nottinghamshire and developed an instinctive love of the countryside.  She studied Archaeology and Ancient History at Nottingham University where a natural drawing ability and knowledge of art techniques made the area of finds recording and archaeological illustration a logical specialisation.  On graduation, Jenny spent the following years working in local government and then in industry.  From 2001 Jenny became self-employed as an artist and free-lance art tutor, and has since enjoyed much success, exhibiting her work through solo shows and galleries in the Midlands and Yorkshire.

Her intention is to create an individual mood and atmosphere in all her paintings and, having chosen the scene, she will let the view dictate the media to be used.  The feel of the day will tell her to use the transparent, glowing colours of watercolour paints, or the loose expressionistic strokes of pastel, or the combination of glazing and brushwork with oil paints, all the while keeping in mind a harmony of colour and tone throughout the painting.  Jenny loves to paint outside, and having a car boot full of materials is essential with this approach!  She has been painting in the Peak District for 18 years, and has an intimate affection for this part of the Hope Valley
